Colours are the main focus in most of Yiling's works. She make use of commonly found objects and materials to create a series of enchanting representations. Her works are based on the idea of recollecting childhood memories and dreams, with an attempt to reflect the emotions that went through her
mind in that point in time. The fact that its never possible to exactly capture
the past intrigues her and thus implying into the works the present emotions
that she wishes to portray. Yiling's idea is to create new memories that she wanted to have in the past and making her dreams into reality.
Being the only child in a family with two working parents, the time a spent with her family is not much as compared to others. She would return home everyday and watch repeating advertisements while doing her homework so that she would not have to feel the cold walls of the empty house. Thus, suppressed by her surrounding environment, Yiling's dreams is to go wild and free. Those dreams have always been buried deep in her heart. It is through the colours that she is able to find a sense of freedom and peace, to identify herself as who she is. Through the playing of colours and objects, she would like to break the boundaries of her mind in search of the dreams she could have had.
Yiling's works tend to blur the lines between fine arts and craft, allowing her to feel and experience the materials she use, bringing herself closer to her art pieces and having a stronger emotional attachment towards them. Yiling's works are also usually tangible, allowing her viewers to be able to interact and 'play' with the pieces within the artwork. It is through these little actions that she could bring out the simple pleasures that she wishes to portray in her works. To allow people to reminisce on their childhood memories along with her.
